About Dan the Money Coach

My Story

May 23, 1992

I graduated college

I graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a Bachelors in Economics.

I managed to avoid taking out any student loans to pay for school, but I wasn’t smart enough to avoid the credit cards.  I graduated with a couple thousand dollars of credit card debt, primarily due to my impressive collection of compact discs.  I love eighties music!

Out on my own

Thanks to working two jobs, my full time career and a part time weekend job, I was keeping afloat financially… but just barely.  I was covering rent, car payments, and credit cards most months, but I wasn’t getting ahead…

I got married

I married the love of my life in a small chapel on the campus of my wife’s alma mater.

We could barely afford to get married, let alone go on a honeymoon.  I still had my debt, my wife had her own student loans, and we had no financial plan… but we were in love and optimistic about our future.

We went further into debt

Like normal people, we took out two car loans, bought a house, and ran up the credit cards buying stuff for the house (e.g. furniture, tv, etc.).

We were up to our eyeballs in debt, but with both of our incomes, we could just cover the payments.  We were living paycheck to paycheck.

We created our financial plan

In May, we had our first child.  My wife and I wanted her to stay home with the baby, but our debt load did not allow it.

The payments had to go!  We created a plan and never looked back.

I earned my MBA in Finance

Thanks to a generous tuition reimbursement plan from my employer, I was able to earn my MBA from Georgia State University.

I discovered that I loved finance… and I was good at it too!

Finally reaping the fruits of our labor

In February, we had our second child and we had put ourselves in a position where we could live on one income.

Following our plan, we went from putting things on our credit cards to survive and barely getting by, to my wife being able to quit her full time job to stay home and raise our kids.

I became a financial coach

After experiencing the joy of getting out of debt, I decided to make it my mission to help others do the same.

I formed an LLC and have been helping individuals, families, and small business owners make wise money choices ever since.
